Portuguese Quartz Inlay Pottery
The city of Nisa, in Alentejo in the central part of Portugal , is rich in both handmade pottery and felt work.
The clay must first be kneaded and brought to the proper consistency. But the true art of the potter lies in the wheel where the pieces are molded, and on the fact that taking the eyes or hands off the wet clay, or the left foot from the pottery wheel, could be fatal to the perfection of the piece.
When a piece is finished on the wheel the design carved on its surface with a stiletto.
The next step relies on the sensitivity of the female hands of the Pedradeiras. This part is done by the artisan’s wife and several other women of the village. The art of inlaying the tiny quartz stones into the engraved motifs of the wet clay makes this pottery art unique. It is a difficult task, requiring talent, time and patience to produce these beautiful designs.
As these pieces of handmade quartz inlayed pottery have not been glazed, they are recommended to be used only for decoration
